Start at the top, using the lace that comes with your corset. Cris-cross the lace through the grommets as if you were lacing a shoe and work your way down to the waist. There are two grommets at the waist that are closer together than the other grommets. Once you get to this grommet, loop it over on the same side, instead of cris-crossing. Do this on both sides, and continue cris-crossing all the way down to the bottom. Tie the ends in a knot. If you have a busk, you will not need to ever untie this knot, unless you are changing out your laces (new ones, a different color, etc.).
If you do NOT have a busk, lace it in the same manner, but keep that knot a bow, you will have to untie it and re-lace each time you put it on.
Then put the corset on, with the laces still LOOSE in the back. Close up your busk in the front, starting at the MIDDLE hook and eye. Then hook the lower and higher hooks. It is IMPERATIVE that you keep the laces loose in the back, otherwise you will put too much pressure on the first hook and eye. Once you have it all hooked, you can start tightening the laces. Take the two laces on the right in your right hand, and the two left laces in your left hand, and PULL them all at the same time. Pull as much as possible. Then, you will notice that it is tight at the waist, and looser on the top and bottom laces. Start at the top, and tighten the top of the laces, working your way down to your waist. Then do the same at the very bottom, working your way up to the waist. You may have to repeat this process once or twice, but it will get easier the more you wear your corset. Once you have laced completely, take the left loop as one, and the two right loop as one, and tie them in a bow at the waist.
To take your corset off, loosen your laces in the back as much as possible. You do not need to remove the laces completely, that's why the busk is so great! Just loosen, then unhook the busk in the front. Voila!
Caution! Do not unclip your busk without first loosening the laces in the back! If you do this, you risk snapping your busk, and this cannot be fixed!
If you choose NOT to have a busk, putting on a corset by yourself may take some time, but the more you do it, the faster you will be able to lace up. You'll get the hang of it!
